I’m a student and need help, what do I do?
It depends what you need help with. If you would like to borrow components or use our materials, come by in our drop-in hours.

If you need help with prototyping or general project sparring, write us an email and we will set up a meeting.

I’m staff and need help for a project, what do I do?
It depends what you need help with. If you would like to borrow components or use our materials, come by in our drop-in hours.

If you need help with prototyping or general project sparring, write us an email and we will set up a meeting.

However we appreciate that some research projects require longer term engagement and scheduling, in this instance, we will set up a meeting with lab staff, so we can set aside the required time and resources.

What do you expect from me when I come to start a project?
Whether you are at an early stage in your project and want to play with some materials or you are developing a specific prototype, we expect you to prepare and research as much as possible, so we can hit the ground running.
Sketch your ideas, find references, bring examples.

I have a small question, what do I do?
Come by during our drop in hours, or write us an email.

Materials

How can I use materials from IxD Lab?
For most use of the workshop and lab, we can supply materials for your project.
We will guide you towards good material choices.

Which materials do you stock?
We have rather large assortment of materials. Amongst these are:
assorted paper and cardboard, plyWood and mdf, assorted acrylics, cloths and other soft materials.

I want to use my own material, which kinds are allowed?
We encourage you to bring your own materials, however an exception being the laser cutter where only approved materials can be used. If you have certain special needs or ideas, come and have a chat with us.

Machines

Which machines do you have?
We have a collection of 3D printers, a laser cutter and assorted hand tools. See more on our laser cutting and 3D printing page

When can I use the machines?
The 3D printers and the laser cutter can be used during our workshop supervision hours when we are present in the workshop.

Can I book a machine?
You cannot book a machine.

Which file format do the machines accept?
For the 3D printers, any common type of 3D file, such as STL, OBJ etc. For the laser cutter, mostly you will want a vector file, such as PDF, SVG, AI or the like.

Restrictions

Can I work on a commercial/private/other project?
Since we have limited facilities, we only allow projects relevant to ITU in our workshop.

Do you offer storage of projects being worked on?
Not immediately, but ask us if you are working on a project for more than one day and we will try to accomodate you.

Can I ask you to make a thing for me?
We would love to be of any help, in making it possible for you to create what you need.
